AI in gaming: the vendors selling to studios
Game studios were among the first buyers of generative AI, and they are among its most demanding. A studio needs art that matches its style, characters that stay in character, voice chat that stays civil and builds that ship without bugs. Each of those jobs now has its own set of AI vendors.
This piece covers the vendors, not the games. We checked 23 companies and platforms against their own websites on 25 and 26 September 2026 and profile 18 of them here, grouped by the job each one does.
The short version
- The work splits into five jobs: characters and dialogue, asset generation, AI inside engines and platforms, voice and player safety, and testing.
- Asset generation is where studios show up by name. The vendors that make 2D and 3D art for games are the ones most likely to name the studios using them.
- Some character and voice vendors lead with other markets. Inworld and Modulate both put markets other than games first on their homepages, while keeping pages and products for studios.
- Engines are adding their own AI. Unity, Roblox and Epic all now ship AI tools to the developers building on them, which puts them alongside, and sometimes against, the vendors here.
Characters and dialogue
These vendors sell the brains and voices behind non-player characters.
Convai sells "Conversational AI Characters" for games, virtual worlds and extended reality. Inworld AI leads with "Realtime AI for consumer-facing applications", and keeps a gaming and media page showing logos from Ubisoft, Xbox and Niantic.
Asset generation
The busiest job in our sample. These vendors generate the 2D art, 3D models and animation a studio would otherwise make by hand, and most train on or adapt to a studio's own style.
Scenario sells "Creative AI Built on Your DNA", and names Scopely, Epic Games, Supercell and Tripledot Studios on its about page. Layer AI, headquartered in San Francisco, says it serves game studios and their marketing teams, and names Zynga, SciPlay and Huuuge Games. Meshy generates 3D models for game development among other uses. Tripo creates 3D models "for solo indie developers and large studio pipelines alike". Kaedim sells "high quality 3D production at scale" to studios and brands. Ludo.ai generates production-ready game assets and sprites. Didimo generates characters "From Heroes to Armies, Instantly" and exports them game-ready. Promethean AI sells what it calls an AI braintrust for professional creative teams.
AI inside engines and platforms
The engines studios already use now ship their own AI, which is both a feature and a competitor to the vendors above.
Unity AI is "Trained on Unity. Designed for game development." Unity said it would retire its earlier Muse tools on 1 October 2025 and replace them with Unity AI, and its AI page now describes Muse as "a deprecated product offering". Roblox offers creators an Assistant that helps them build games faster, and released and open-sourced Cube, its 3D generation model, in March 2025. Epic launched its AI-powered Epic Developer Assistant on the web earlier in 2025, and in October 2025 brought it to Unreal Engine.
Voice and player safety
Online games need to keep voice and text chat safe at scale, and this is one of the most mature uses of AI in the industry.
Modulate leads its homepage with the risks in voice data generally, and sells ToxMod, "voice safety built for social & gaming communities". Its case studies name Activision and Rockstar Games. We covered Modulate in our voice AI landscape. GGWP sells community safety tools to developers and publishers, with logos from KRAFTON, Tencent Games and Wizards of the Coast on its site.
One voice vendor has left the market. Replica Studios, which sold AI voices, posted a farewell page in 2025 saying it had "officially signed off", and its domain no longer loads.
Testing
The newest job on this list: agents that play the game to find bugs before players do. modl.ai says "Let AI find game bugs before your players do". nunu.ai sells AI agents for game testing. ManaMind, headquartered in London, sells "autonomous AI quality assurance for video games".
How these companies charge
Credits dominate. Scenario, Meshy, Tripo, Ludo.ai, Convai and nunu.ai all sell subscriptions with a monthly allowance, measured in credits, interactions or agent hours. Kaedim publishes credit-based plans on a plans page that its sitemap lists but its navigation does not. Layer AI prices in what it calls Creative Units and says it does not charge per seat. Modulate sells ToxMod in monthly service tiers. We found no published rate for GGWP or modl.ai.
What to ask before you buy
- Will it keep our style, and who owns what it makes? Ask how the model learns your art direction and what the contract says about the output.
- Is gaming still this vendor's main market? Several character and voice vendors now lead with other industries. Ask where their roadmap is pointed.
- Will your engine do this next year? Unity, Roblox and Epic are all adding AI. Ask the vendor what it does that the engine will not.
- Which logos are customers? Some vendors label studio logos as partners. Ask for a reference at a studio like yours.
If you sell one of these products, expect these questions in the first reply.
How we did this
We checked 23 companies and platforms against their own websites on 25 and 26 September 2026, and profile 18 of them here, described the way each describes itself. Replica Studios appears only as an event. We left out Rosebud AI, which sells to aspiring developers; Charisma.ai, which now sells to creators, educators and brands; Kinetix, whose homepage now leads with video generation; and Spectrum Labs, which ActiveFence acquired in 2023 and whose address now redirects to alice.io, ActiveFence's new name, where the homepage does not mention games. We report studio names as a vendor presents them, and say "logos" where a site shows only logos. Ownership changes and shutdowns come from the companies' own announcements and pages. The list covers the vendors we examined, not the whole market.
